Vigan City, the Philippines' lone entry, made it to the list of 21 cities going through the next phase of Swiss Foundation New7Wonders.

In an aim to create a "global memory", New7Wonders Founder and President Bernard Weber announced the longlist of the New7WondersCities which contains 21 finalists.

Vigan is the capital of the Province of Ilocos Sur.

According to the 2010 Philippines census, it has a population of 49,747 people.

It is a World Heritage Site in that it is one of the few Hispanic towns left in the Philippines where its structures remained intact, and is well known for its cobblestone streets, and a unique architecture that fuses Philippine and Oriental building designs and construction, with colonial European architecture.

The global election started on March 7 last year. People all over the world voted for their choices among 300 cities to come up with the long list of 77.

The New7Wonders Cities Panel of Experts advise on the selection of the 28 Official Finalist Candidates.

Cebu City and Iloilo also vied for the title but they both failed to be qualified for the next phase.

Voting for the New7Wonders Cities Finalists continues across three phases:

  • 28-21 phase
    21 Oct 2013 - 7 July 2014
  • 21-14 phase
    7 July 2014 - 7 Oct 2014
  • 14-7 phase
    7 Oct 2014 - 7 Dec 2014
