WHO'S BEHIND THE BLACK SAND MINING IN ILOCOS REGION? "Moving Heaven and Earth in search of huge profit"

Anakpawis Partylist had filed House Resolution 2203 urging Congress to investigate the impact of black sand (magnetite) mining in Northern Philippines to the environment and livelihood of the people living in the coastal areas where the mining operations are taking place.

Political Dynasty: Ilocos Sur Political Trend, Threatens Life and Dignity

Large scale corruption by elected officials, violence and harassment are the dominant features of the political landscape, exploiting and endangering the lives of the majority poor. Candidates of the 2010 elections shows a very disturbing and alarming political trend in Ilocos Sur. Political lordship has become a private property being inherited, passed on or transferred to every family member of a political clan. Worse is elective political position is turned into a family owned and cotrolled business, to the detriment of various families already wallowing in appalling poverty.

Baluarte Watch Tower

Built by the Spaniards during their heydays, the mighty Baluarte was used as watch tower and observation post by the authorities for impending danger from the sea. Not from typhoons or tsunamis, but from the Abu Sayafs at that time: the Japanese, Chinese and Moro pirates who took pleasure in raping coastal towns and settlements.

Poro Point to become north's gateway

GATEWAY IN THE NORTH. Poro Point Freeport Zone reveals development plan that promises tourism for North Luzon. Graphics by Teddy PavonGATEWAY IN THE NORTH. Poro Point Freeport Zone reveals development plan that promises tourism for North Luzon. Graphics by Teddy Pavon

Former US military base Poro Point Freeport Zone (PPFZ) is on its way to becoming the gateway in the north for trade, commerce and tourism, officials said.

Bases Coversion and Development Authority (BCDA), which is tasked to oversee the development of former US military bases in the Philippines, and Poro Point Management Corporation (PPMC), the managing entity of the freeport recently unveiled plans for its development.

"It (Poro Point) has the necessary infrastructure. It's a freeport and a special economic zone that would drive economic activity in the region," Bases Coversion and Development Authority (BCDA) president and CEO Arnel Paciano D. Casanova told Rappler in an interview in March.

He added that Poro Point has an international airport and a seaport and could serve as a regional gateway to the Ilocandia and Cordilleras, both located north of capital Manila.

With commercial flights expected to resume at the recently upgraded airport in the freeport's host city, San Fernando, Poro Point is just an hour away from Hong Kong and Taiwan, 3 hours from Singapore and 3.5 hours away from Korea, said PPMC president Florante S. Gerdan during a press conference.

Maja Salvador, Gerald Anderson and friends spotted in La Union

Gerald Anderson and Maja Salvador and their friends were recently spotted in La Union as shown in the photos posted by Rayver Cruz on his Instagram account.

The group took advantage of the summer sun in the beach doing team building activities. They also did surfing as La Union is one of the famous surf destinations in the Philippines. Maja and Rayver were generous to share their photos via Instagram and by the look of it, they had so much fun.

The La Union trip was for Gerald’s post-birthday celebration. Also seen in the photos were Fred Payawan and Jason Abalos.

Gerald and Maja have denied that they are already in relationship, but occasions like these seem to tell us otherwise.
