WHO'S BEHIND THE BLACK SAND MINING IN ILOCOS REGION? "Moving Heaven and Earth in search of huge profit"

Political Dynasty: Ilocos Sur Political Trend, Threatens Life and Dignity

Large scale corruption by elected officials, violence and harassment are the dominant features of the political landscape, exploiting and endangering the lives of the majority poor. Candidates of the 2010 elections shows a very disturbing and alarming political trend in Ilocos Sur. Political lordship has become a private property being inherited, passed on or transferred to every family member of a political clan. Worse is elective political position is turned into a family owned and cotrolled business, to the detriment of various families already wallowing in appalling poverty.

Baluarte Watch Tower

Built by the Spaniards during their heydays, the mighty Baluarte was used as watch tower and observation post by the authorities for impending danger from the sea. Not from typhoons or tsunamis, but from the Abu Sayafs at that time: the Japanese, Chinese and Moro pirates who took pleasure in raping coastal towns and settlements.

Bangui Wind Farm: Harnessing the wind

They’re tall and white, and silhouetted against the backdrop of blue sea and green mountain, the tri-blade windmills of this remote coastal town up north can be an impressive sight. Indeed, in the last few years, people from various places flock to the base of the wind farm or to a view deck that offers a panoramic view of some of the 15 giant structures. Local and foreign tourists have taken thousands of pictures of the windmills, with many of the photos landing in personal online blogs. One such brag shot shows the windmills providing a backdrop to a smiling young lady in mid-leap, the shutter catching her off ground, arms outstretched. It is a pose that some have been seen trying to duplicate while visiting the site.

Pangasinan chesser bags four golds

Veteran internationalist Samantha Glo Revita of host Pangasinan checkmated Jee-Ann Faye Barry of Baguio to rule the girls’ individual rapid chess and finish with four gold medals at the close of the Northern Luzon qualifier of the Batang Pinoy Games at the Narciso Ramos Sports Complex here yesterday.
The 13-year-old Revita, who won gold medals in competitions in Indonesia, China, Turkey, Thailand and Vietnam, employed the Sicilian Sveshnikov Variation to seize a two-pawn, bishop advantage and win by a checkmate.

The end came when Revita, who was slowed down by an opening round draw, used his two-pawn battering ram to force Barry, unbeaten in five matches going into this round, to place his king in the corner where it got checkmated. The win catapulted Revita from second to first with 5.5 points.

Revita, a double-gold medallist in last May’s Palarong Pambansa also staged here, thus emerged the best performer in chess after she also topped the individual standard and blitz events and led Pangasinan’s blitz team also composed of Macydel Fajardo and Regyne Palaming to gold.

The freshman Rosales National High School, an hour and a half by bus from this coastal town, had a chance to go home with six gold medals and join the elite club that included tankers Jamleth Villanueva of Olongapo City, Gwyneth Amber Cawaling of La Union and Jenkins Labao of Baguio City.

But Revita, who has trained under Olympiad veteran Grandmaster Oliver Barbosa for a year now, settled for silver medals in the team rapid and standard events after Baguio City found a way to snatch the mints in the two events.

“I’ve been taught tactics by my coach (Barbosa) and I’ve applied them in this tournament,” said Revita, who was taught the game by her father, geodetic engineer Sammy, at three years old after she saw her sister Ria, three years older than her, playing it.

“I’m happy taking home four gold medals,” she added.

Pangasinan also struck in karatedo after John Enrico Vasquez snared three golds and John Matthew Manantan and Gilbert Arellano copped two apiece in the sport where the host province hauled a whopping 15.

Vasquez defeated Narayana Mesina of Pangasinan in the boys -39kg kumite after winning the individual and team kata with Arellano and Mesina late Friday. Arellano also won the -35kg individual kata.

Manantan followed up his golden feat in the kata with a victory in the boys -63 kumite while karatekas Arianne Isabel Yu Brito (girls -39kg), Znargie Maye Juguilion (girls -43kg), Kristelle Ira Zabala (girls -47kg) and Janna Angeles (girls -54kg) also contributed to Pangasinan’s success.

Other winners for the host province were Jude Uson (boys -35kg), John Jerick Obra (boys -49kg) and John Marc Claveria (boys -58kg) in the kumite and Aldrin Christian Yu Brito (boys-35kg) and Zabala (girls -47kg) scored victories in the advanced kata.

In baseball, which hosted the national finals here, Tarlac flattened Manila, 19-9, thanks to 11 runs in the last three innings that zapped the fight out of the Big City bets, who were just trailing by just a run before that home run binge.

Pangasinan trailed Baguio City the other day after the country’s summer capital struck hard in taekwondo and swimming but the hosts recovered quickly, finishing the talent discovery program for athletes 15 years old and below with 70 gold, 86 silver and 80 bronze medals.

The City of Pines, which had eight victories in arnis but could only muster two in karatedo, collected 65 gold, 56 silver and 48 bronze medals while Malolos, Bulacan placed third with a 16-11-10 haul.

Malolos drew strength from swimming and badminton courtesy of boys’ singles champion John Matthew Bernardo, Paola Beatriz Bernardo (girls singles) and the duo of Chanel Lunod and Paola Bernardo in girls doubles.

Narvacan Tourism Complex: Zip-Line

The fully operational Zip-line, measuring well over 500 meters, stretches from the top of the majestic Bantay Abot all the way down to the Bay Boulevard along the coastline of Narvacan. It provides a breathtaking view of the great plains beneath the mountain range as well as the South China Sea, approximately 47 seconds from end to end at a speed of 40 kilometers per hour.
The Narvacan Tourism Complex located at Brgy. Bulanos, Narvacan is also the site of the Municipal Tourism Office.

The launching of the Narvacan Tourism Complex is a significant breakthrough for the tourism development of Narvacan, bringing the town closer to realizing its goal of becoming a premier tourist destination in the Ilocos Region.

An up-and-coming attraction of the Narvacan Tourism Complex is the soon to be completed Container Van Facilities.  The Container Van Facilities will be used to accommodate different functions such as weddings, birthdays, conferences, meetings, film and TV shootings.  The container vans will have a restaurant and bar, roof deck, orientation/conference room and locker rooms.  The facility has an ample parking space that can accommodate around 100 cars, with a separate parking area for tourist buses and small vehicles.  It will also have an area for outdoor activities such as picnic and camping.
The Via Ferrata, a walkway to be built along the stone walls of Bantay Abot, has a distance of 900 meters from the Zip-line tower to the rappelling station.

The tourism adventure zone was dubbed, "Narvacan Outdoor Adventure Hub (NOAH)."
To note, the 280-m vertical via ferrata in Narvacan, Ilocos Sur is the first tourism adventure in the country while the 520-m zipline is considered the longest in Northern Luzon. It was learned that these tourists’ activities were designed using high –quality equipment from abroad to ensure safety of all users.

HOW TO GET THERE
(Manila to Narvacan) By Bus. Take a bus bound for Laoag. Travel time is 8-10 hours, so I would recommend a night trip for this. Several bus companies such as Partas, GV Florida Transport, Dominion Bus Lines, and Fariñas Transit have regular trips that will take you directly to Narvacan. Check out their websites for the trip schedules.

By Plane. Take a direct flight from Manila to Laoag via Cebu Pacific or Philippine Airlines. Travel time is 45 minutes. Flights are usually at night, so better make the necessary adjustments on your itinerary. How to get out of Laoag Airport to the City proper. There is a jeepney that brings passengers from the airport terminal to the city proper, just look for the old man manning his jeepney. Fare is 60 pesos. Or you may take a tricycle from the airport to the city proper.

(Laoag to Narvacan) Option 1. Take a bus bound for Cubao, Pasay, or Baguio. Travel time is 3-4 hours. Several bus companies such as Partas, GV Florida Transport, Dominion Bus Lines, and Fariñas Transit have regular trips that will take you directly to Narvacan.
